INSTAL WINDOWS 7 USB

What Do I Need?

  1. USB Drive of size 4GB or more
  2. Windows 7 DVD or ISO download

How to Create a Bootable USB Flash Drive?

1. Insert the USB Drive or Pen drive into your computer.

2. Open the command prompt (Run – > cmd).

3. Type diskpart’ and hit Enter. Diskpart Utility of Windows opens up.

4. In this window type ‘list disk’ to see all the disks in your computer. This step is needed so that you identify the disk ID of the USB device. Note down the Disk Number of your USB drive. You can find it in the list by it’s size. In our case it’s Disk 1 (Image below).

5. Type ‘select disk 1′ and hit enter. Make sure you select the disk which you noted in the step 4.

6. Now we will clean the pen drive. To do that, type ‘clean’ and hit enter.

7. Type ‘Create Partition Primary’ and hit enter.

8. Type ‘Select Partition 1′ and hit enter.

9. Type ‘Active’ and press enter.

10. It’s time to format your USB drive. To do that type ‘Format FS=FAT32′ and press enter. Windows will now format your Pen drive. Wait till it gets 100% completed.

11. Type ‘assign’ and hit enter. Windows now will assign a drive letter or mount point to the USB drive.

12. Type ‘exit’ and press enter.

13. Insert the Windows 7 DVD into your DVD Drive. In case you have a Windows 7 ISO downloaded, mount it using free software like MagicDisc.

14. Note down the drive letter of the DVD Drive and the Pen Drive. Open My Computer to know them. In our case it’s “G” for DVD Drive and “H” for USB Drive.

15. Open command prompt (cmd):

Type G: and hit enter. (Make sure you enter your DVD drive letter noted in Step 14)

Type CD boot and hit enter

Type bootsect.exe/nt60 H: (Where “H” is the USB Drive letter. Make sure to replace it with noted values in Step 14). This step actually applies the master boot code that is compatible with BOOTMGR.

16. Now open Windows Explorer and copy all the Windows 7 DVD content into the USB Flash drive.

17. Reboot Windows into BIOS mode and setup BIOS to boot from USB Drive. Setting this option varies with PC configuration and hardware. One of the following may suit your computer BIOS. Try it out. Or check your PC manufacturer manual to know how to boot into BIOS.

1. GENERIC

Open BIOS. Open Advanced Setup, Boot options, or Feature Setup. Specify Boot order.

2. AMI BIOS

Boot into BIOS. Go to Feature Setup. Enable these options: “USB Function Support“, “USB Function For DOS” and “ThumbDrive for DOS“. Go to “Advanced Setup“. Set the “1st Boot Device” to “USB RMD-FDD“.

3. PHOENIX/AWARD BIOS

Boot into BIOS. Go to Advanced BIOS Features. Go to the “1st Boot device” and set it to “USB-ZIP“.

18. You are done. Insert pen drive and boot your system to start installing Windows 7 from the Pen Drive.
